Actual weight and volumetric weight

Air freight is charged on whichever is greater: the actual gross weight of the cargo, or the weight derived from the space it occupies. The commonly used calculation is length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 6000.

The practical consequence: in air freight, packaging is a direct cost. An oversized box, unused height or an over-tall pallet means paying to fly air. Sending dimensions with your enquiry, not just weight, produces a far more accurate price.

When air freight genuinely pays

A stopped production line. The daily cost of a halted line usually covers the freight difference within hours.
High-value, low-volume cargo. Freight stays a small share of goods value, and financing and insurance exposure shorten with the transit.
Short shelf life or a season. When the cost of being late exceeds the value of the goods themselves.

For heavy, bulky cargo with a flexible date, sea or road is almost always the right call. We say which one fits rather than limiting the answer to the mode you asked about.

How is air freight charged?

Does packaging really affect the price?

Directly. A box carrying empty space raises the volumetric weight, which means paying to fly air. Optimising dimensions is usually the fastest way to reduce air freight cost on a recurring shipment.

When does air freight make sense?

When a production line is stopped, when the cargo is high in value and low in volume, or when shelf life or a season is at stake. For heavy, bulky cargo with a flexible date, sea or road is almost always more suitable.

Can dangerous goods travel by air?

Certain classes and conditions, yes, under IATA DGR rules, with approved packaging, correct declaration and airline approval where required. The assessment starts from the safety data sheet and the UN number.

Do you deliver door to door?

Yes. The leg beyond the airport and customs clearance are included, quoted as a single all-in cost.

Do you handle customs clearance too?

Yes, on export and import, including origin and movement documents. On urgent shipments the hours are usually lost where transport and customs sit with different providers.

How long does delivery take?

It depends on the routing, the flight schedule and the customs process. Transit time is stated in the quotation for the specific lane; on urgent work we also state the shortest realistic option.

What do you need for a quotation?

Pickup and delivery locations, number of packages, dimensions of each package and weight, nature of the goods and the Incoterms rule. An air freight price given without dimensions is an estimate.

Send the dimensions, not just the weight. In air freight the price is often set by volume rather than kilos; with the measurements we can quote accurately and suggest a packing change where it saves money.
