Italy is one of Edora's strongest and busiest lanes.
Italy is one of our core European markets, both as an origin and as a destination. With Türkiye the customs union applies: industrial goods move duty free under an A.TR movement certificate. Towards the Gulf, North Africa, the Caucasus and Central Asia, Italy is instead the starting point of lanes where the decisive variable is not the freight rate but who handles customs at destination.
| Direction | Prevailing modes | Key document |
|---|---|---|
| Italy to Türkiye | Full truck, groupage, ro-ro on the Adriatic | A.TR for industrial products |
| Türkiye to Italy | Full truck and groupage, containers by sea | A.TR, or EUR.1 outside the customs union |
| Italy to the Gulf and North Africa | FCL and LCL containers, break bulk | Certificate of origin and destination-country conformity |
| Italy to the Caucasus and Central Asia | Road under transit, multimodal via the Caspian | Transit document and guarantee |
| Goods transiting Italy | T1 regime | No import, no duty |
On European lanes most cargo travels on a standard semi-trailer. The limits to keep in mind when planning are the gross combination weight, generally 40 tonnes — with a higher threshold provided for combined transport — a usable length of about 13.6 metres and an indicative capacity of 33 euro pallets on the floor.
These look like technical numbers and they decide the cost: a load that exceeds capacity by two pallets does not pay two per cent more, it pays for a second vehicle. When an enquiry comes in with volumes close to the threshold we say so upfront, because reviewing the packing is often enough to stay within it.
Groupage is the right choice below a certain threshold, not by definition. Broadly around 13 to 15 cubic metres by sea, and at a significant fraction of the vehicle by road, the calculation should be run both ways: above that band a full load often costs less and arrives sooner, because it skips two warehouse handlings.
We also work on a neutral basis for other forwarders: on cargo entrusted by colleagues we do not contact your customer and do not offer downstream services. The terms are set out on our sea freight page.
Not everything touching Italy has to be imported into it. Under a transit regime goods cross the customs territory without generating duty or import VAT, against a guarantee. It is the structure underpinning much of triangular trade: you buy in one country, deliver in a third, and the country of passage remains just that.
For industrial products and processed agricultural goods, yes: it is the document allowing duty-free circulation within the scope of the customs union. Outside that scope different documents apply, in particular EUR.1. Our Türkiye page covers this in detail.
On a standard semi-trailer, indicatively 33 euro pallets on the floor, with a usable length of around 13.6 metres. The reference gross combination weight is generally 40 tonnes, with a higher threshold provided for combined transport.
By sea, indicatively above 13 to 15 cubic metres the calculation should be redone, because a full container often costs less than the equivalent groupage and arrives sooner. By road the threshold depends on weight and dimensions and we check it per consignment.
Yes, on a neutral basis: on cargo entrusted by colleagues we do not contact your customer, documentation follows your instructions, and we do not offer parallel services. We put it in writing before the first shipment.
No. Under a transit regime goods cross the customs territory without being imported: no customs debt and no import VAT arise, against a guarantee.
Yes, on export and import, including origin and movement documents. It is the part where most days are lost when transport and customs are handled by different providers.
Yes, under ADR by road and IMDG by sea, with approved packaging and complete documentation. For chemical liquids the assessment always starts from the safety data sheet.
Pickup and delivery locations, dimensions, weight and number of packages, nature of the goods and the Incoterms rule you want. For dangerous goods, also the UN number and class; for non-European destinations, the tariff code.
Send us the routing, the volume and the delivery term. You get a single all-in cost, a realistic transit time and — where one exists — the alternative that costs less than the one you asked for.
