Air freight from Turkey to Europe and the Gulf typically takes 1–3 days airport-to-airport and around 3–6 working days door-to-door, once pickup, customs and final delivery are included. Pricing is based on the chargeable weight: the higher of the gross weight and the volumetric weight, calculated with the IATA ratio of cm³ / 6000 (1 m³ = 167 kg). The core documents are the air waybill (AWB), commercial invoice, packing list and export declaration, with IATA DGR rules on top for dangerous goods and lithium batteries.
When is air freight the right choice?
Air freight makes sense when the cargo is high in value relative to its weight and the deadline matters. Typical cases: urgent spare parts, samples, electronics, fast-moving fashion, pharmaceuticals and e-commerce restocking.
For heavy, bulky, non-urgent cargo, air rarely pays off. For regular volumes to Europe, international road freight usually wins; for heavy cargo and distant markets, sea freight is often the better fit.
| Criterion | Air freight | Road freight | Sea freight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical time to Europe | 1–3 days airport-to-airport; usually 3–6 working days door-to-door | Usually 3–8 days door-to-door (country, FTL/groupage and customs) | Usually 1–3 weeks port-to-port (depends on port and service) |
| Cost level | Highest per kg | Medium | Lowest per unit |
| Best suited to | Urgent, light, high-value goods, samples, pharma | Pallets and full truckloads, regular European flows | Heavy and bulky cargo, containers, distant markets |
| What drives the price | Chargeable weight (1 m³ = 167 kg) | Pallet, loading metre or full truck | Container (FCL) or m³/tonne (LCL) |
How long does air freight from Turkey take?
Istanbul Airport (IST) to Frankfurt is roughly a 3-hour flight, and to Dubai about 4.5 hours. The total transit time depends mostly on what happens around the flight:
- Cut-off time: cargo must reach the terminal in time for acceptance and security screening, or it moves to the next flight.
- Export customs: the export declaration must be closed before the goods can be loaded.
- Import clearance and delivery: customs at destination plus last-mile delivery typically add 1–2 days.
For Europe and the Gulf, plan on 1–3 days airport-to-airport and 3–6 working days door-to-door; connections and peak seasons can stretch this. For a comparison with trucking, see our guide to Turkey–Europe transit times.
How is the air freight price calculated?
Aircraft are limited by space as well as weight, so airlines apply the industry-standard IATA ratio of 1:6000: volumetric weight (kg) = length × width × height (cm) / 6000. In other words, every cubic metre counts as at least 167 kg. Whichever is higher, gross or volumetric weight, becomes the chargeable weight.
Worked example: one pallet measuring 120 × 80 × 100 cm with a gross weight of 150 kg.
- Volume: 120 × 80 × 100 = 960,000 cm³ (0.96 m³)
- Volumetric weight: 960,000 / 6000 = 160 kg
- Since 160 kg is higher than the 150 kg gross weight, you are billed on 160 kg.
Express couriers often use a different divisor (commonly 5000), which makes light but bulky boxes more expensive to send that way.
Beyond the base airfreight rate, a quote may include a fuel surcharge (FSC), a security surcharge, terminal and handling fees, an AWB fee, export and import customs clearance, duties and taxes, and delivery at destination. These vary by airline, route and season, so compare quotes on total cost.
Which documents do you need?
- Air waybill (AWB): the contract of carriage and receipt for the goods. Unlike an ocean bill of lading, it is non-negotiable and not a document of title. In consolidations, the airline issues a master AWB (MAWB) and the forwarder a house AWB (HAWB).
- Commercial invoice and packing list (number of pieces, dimensions, gross and net weights).
- Export customs declaration.
- Origin or movement certificates where relevant: A.TR for industrial goods to the EU, EUR.1 or a certificate of origin for free-trade partners. See our explainer on A.TR vs EUR.1.
- For dangerous goods, a Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods under the IATA DGR, plus the safety data sheet (MSDS/SDS).
For air cargo into the EU, the ICS2 system requires electronic security data before loading, so precise consignee details and goods descriptions are essential.
Dangerous goods, lithium batteries and cold chain
Dangerous goods (paints, aerosols, chemicals, some cosmetics) fall under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. The shipper is responsible for classification, packaging, marking and the declaration, and the person signing it must be trained. For the road equivalent, read our ADR dangerous goods guide.
Lithium batteries cause the most rejected bookings. Lithium-ion batteries shipped on their own (UN3480) are forbidden as cargo on passenger aircraft, travel on cargo aircraft only, and must be at a state of charge not exceeding 30% unless specifically approved. Batteries packed with or contained in equipment (UN3481) follow separate packing instructions. Share the battery type and test documents before booking.
For pharmaceuticals, IATA’s temperature control rules apply, and temperature-controlled healthcare shipments carry the “Time and Temperature Sensitive” label. Suitable packaging and early planning are essential.
Express courier or general air cargo?
For documents and parcels of a few kilos, an express courier is usually simplest: pickup, customs and delivery in one service. From roughly several tens of kilos upwards, consolidated general air cargo often becomes more cost-effective. There is no fixed threshold, so price both options for the same shipment.
Delivery terms and Incoterms
Air shipments can be arranged airport-to-airport or fully door-to-door, including pickup and final delivery. Incoterms define who handles what: EXW, FCA, CPT, DAP and DDP all work for air. FOB and CIF are defined for sea and inland waterway transport only, so FCA and CPT/CIP are the usual choices in air freight. Our Incoterms 2020 guide covers the details.
If your buyer prefers not to deal with import formalities, consider DDP (Delivered Duty Paid), where duties and taxes at destination are included in the delivery.
What we do

Frequently asked questions
What is the air freight transit time from Turkey to Germany?
The Istanbul–Frankfurt flight takes about 3 hours, and airport-to-airport transit is typically 1–3 days. Door-to-door, including pickup, customs and delivery, usually takes 3–6 working days.
How long does air cargo from Istanbul to Dubai take?
The flight is roughly 4.5 hours. With cut-off times, export customs and handling at arrival, airport-to-airport transit is typically 1–3 days, and door-to-door delivery a few working days.
How do you calculate volumetric weight for air freight?
Multiply length × width × height in centimetres and divide by 6000, which equals 167 kg per cubic metre. The higher of the gross and volumetric weight is the chargeable weight.
What is an air waybill (AWB)?
The AWB is the air cargo transport document that serves as the contract of carriage and the receipt for the goods. Unlike a bill of lading, it is non-negotiable and does not transfer ownership.
Can products with lithium batteries be shipped by air?
Yes, under IATA DGR rules. Standalone lithium-ion batteries go on cargo aircraft only with a limited state of charge, while batteries in or packed with equipment have their own packing and marking requirements.
Which Incoterms suit air freight?
EXW, FCA, CPT, CIP, DAP, DPU and DDP apply to any mode of transport. FOB and CIF are for sea and inland waterway only, so FCA or CPT are the usual choices for air.
