In Greece the mainland is measured in days and the islands in ferry schedules, so plan with the full delivery address.
Freight from Turkey to Greece mostly moves by road through the İpsala–Kipoi border crossing, while sea freight to Piraeus and Thessaloniki is a common choice for containerised and heavy cargo. Greece is an EU member: industrial goods with an A.TR enter free of customs duty, but Greek import VAT (standard rate 24%) applies on arrival. A full truck typically reaches Thessaloniki in 1–2 days and Athens in 2–4 days; island deliveries need extra time for the ferry leg.
For cargo from Istanbul, Thrace and the Aegean region, the main land gateway is İpsala–Kipoi. The Pazarkule–Kastanies crossing near Edirne serves mainly passenger traffic and should not be treated as a routine freight option. Depending on border congestion and the delivery point, some trucks for northern Greece are routed via Bulgaria (Kulata–Promachonas); this is decided shipment by shipment.
By sea, container services link Ambarlı, İzmir (Aliağa) and Mersin with Piraeus and Thessaloniki, either direct or with transshipment. Greece is also the departure point for ferry lines to Italy (Igoumenitsa, Patras), which can become relevant for Italy shipments. For neighbouring lanes, see our Europe destinations.
For mainland deliveries, waiting time at İpsala and customs handling are the main variables. For the islands, ferry schedules and vehicle bookings set the pace. The ranges below are typical and vary with routing and season.
| Mode | Typical transit | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Road, full truck (FTL) | Thessaloniki typically 1–2 days, Athens typically 2–4 days | Full loads to the mainland |
| Road, groupage (LTL) | Typically 3–7 days incl. consolidation | Regular shipments of a few pallets |
| Sea (Piraeus / Thessaloniki) | Typically 3–10 days port to port, depending on transshipment | Containers, heavy and bulky cargo |
| Air (Athens / Thessaloniki) | Typically 1–2 days | Urgent, low-volume shipments |
To compare with other European lanes, see our guide to Turkey–Europe transit times.
Under the EU–Turkey Customs Union, industrial goods in free circulation in Turkey enter Greece duty-free with an A.TR. Basic and processed agricultural products and steel follow separate regimes and need a valid proof of origin for preferential treatment. Certain products may also face EU anti-dumping duties.
Duty exemption does not remove VAT: Greek import VAT (standard 24%, with reduced rates for some goods) is charged at import and is normally recoverable by a VAT-registered buyer. For steel, aluminium, cement and fertilisers, it is worth clarifying the importer’s CBAM obligations with the buyer before shipping.
For regular full loads to the mainland, FTL road freight is the most practical choice. Small batches travel more economically as groupage. Container-friendly, non-urgent or very heavy cargo can go by sea to Piraeus or Thessaloniki; our FCL vs LCL guide explains the difference. Urgent parts suit air freight. When choosing delivery terms, our Incoterms 2020 guide shows where responsibilities change hands.
A full truck typically reaches Thessaloniki in 1–2 days and Athens in 2–4 days. Island deliveries take longer because of the ferry leg.
İpsala–Kipoi is the main freight crossing. Pazarkule–Kastanies is used mainly by passenger traffic.
Industrial goods with an A.TR are duty-free. Greek import VAT still applies, and agricultural and steel products follow separate rules.
Yes. The truck or trailer crosses by ferry from the mainland, so bookings and seasonal capacity need to be planned.
For containerised, heavy or non-urgent cargo, sea freight to Piraeus or Thessaloniki is often worth comparing with road.
