A full truckload from Istanbul to Vienna usually takes 4–6 days, the route you choose sets the pace.
Freight from Turkey to Austria moves mainly by truck across the Balkans (Bulgaria–Romania–Hungary or Bulgaria–Serbia–Hungary) or by Ro-Ro to Trieste and on by road. A full truckload from Istanbul to Vienna typically takes 4–6 days, depending on border queues, season and driving bans. Industrial goods with an A.TR usually pay no duty, but Austrian import VAT of 20% applies.
There are three main options:
| Option | Typical door-to-door time | Advantage | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Road – EU route (BG–RO–HU) | Usually 4–6 days | Entirely within the EU after Kapıkule | Longer distance; Kapıkule queues |
| Road – via Serbia | Usually 4–6 days | Shorter distance | Two non-EU border crossings; T1/TIR required |
| Ro-Ro Pendik–Trieste + road | Usually 5–8 days | Avoids Balkan borders; close to Carinthia and Styria | Depends on sailing schedule and cut-off |
| Groupage (LTL) by road | Usually 6–10 days | Cost-effective for a few pallets | Consolidation and distribution add days |
Istanbul to Vienna is roughly 1,500–1,800 km by road. A full truckload to eastern Austria (Vienna, Lower Austria, Linz) usually takes 4–6 days; add one or two days for Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg. On DFDS’s Pendik–Trieste line the sea crossing is about 65 hours, plus port handling and the road leg.
The main variables are waiting times at Kapıkule, holiday peaks, winter weather and the temporary Schengen border controls Austria has repeatedly extended at its Hungarian and Slovenian borders. See our Turkey–Europe transit times overview.
Standard EU rules apply. A typical file:
Under the EU–Turkey customs union, industrial goods accompanied by a valid A.TR are generally duty-free. Goods outside its scope, such as many agricultural products, may be dutiable depending on HS code and origin.
Even with zero duty, Austrian import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) is due. The standard rate is 20%, with reduced rates for some goods (for example 10% for many foods, books and medicines, and 13% for certain agricultural goods). The base is the customs value plus any duty and transport costs to the first EU destination. Eligible importers can account for import VAT in their periodic VAT return instead of paying at the border. For fully landed delivery, see DDP delivery terms.
Across Austria, lorries over 7.5 t face a night ban from 22:00 to 05:00 (certified low-noise vehicles are exempt at 60 km/h) and a weekend ban from Saturday 15:00 to Sunday 22:00, with similar bans on public holidays.
Deliveries into Tyrol (Innsbruck, Kufstein, Schwaz) face extra rules. On the A12 Inn Valley motorway between Langkampfen and Ampass, a sectoral driving ban covers goods such as stone, timber, steel, ceramic tiles, paper and cement; Euro VI vehicles loading or unloading in the zone are exempt. The A12 also has a seasonal night ban, and block dispatch (Blockabfertigung) runs at Kufstein on announced days. Italy’s challenge (case C-524/24) is pending at the EU Court of Justice, so always check the current calendar.
A full truckload from Istanbul to Vienna usually takes 4–6 days, a day or two more for western Austria. Ro-Ro via Trieste typically takes 5–8 days, groupage 6–10 days, depending on borders, season and driving bans.
Commercial invoice, packing list, Turkish export declaration, CMR and an A.TR for industrial goods (EUR.1 for agricultural goods). A T1 covers transit movements, and the Austrian consignee needs an EORI number.
Yes. A few pallets can be consolidated with other shipments on groupage trucks, with transit a few days longer than a full truckload.
