Spain is one of the European markets where the choice between road and sea genuinely has to be calculated: the distance from Türkiye and the eastern Mediterranean makes the vessel competitive on volumes that would travel by truck elsewhere. As an EU member state, the customs union with Türkiye applies and the A.TR movement certificate removes duty on industrial goods. The operational question therefore shifts to transit time and the choice of port.

Spain’s main commercial ports are Valencia and Barcelona on the Mediterranean, Algeciras at the strait — one of the largest transhipment hubs in the Mediterranean — and Bilbao on the Atlantic. The choice of port does not follow the sea leg alone but the final inland destination: discharging closer to the customer can be worth more than a slightly better ocean rate.
