    Overview

On the Bulgaria lane the border, not the distance, sets the clock: a truck with clean paperwork saves hours at Kapıkule.

Freight from Turkey to Bulgaria moves mostly by road (FTL and groupage), entering the EU at the Kapıkule–Kapitan Andreevo or Hamzabeyli–Lesovo border crossings. Because Bulgaria is an EU member, industrial goods travelling with an A.TR movement certificate clear free of customs duty, while Bulgarian import VAT (standard rate 20%) is still due on arrival. A full truck typically reaches Sofia or Plovdiv in 1–3 days, depending mainly on border queues. Complete, consistent paperwork prepared before loading is what keeps that time short.

How does freight from Turkey to Bulgaria work?

Bulgaria is Turkey’s first land gateway into the European Union, so most consignments are planned as door-to-door road freight. Loads from Istanbul, Thrace and Bursa usually cross at Kapıkule; when queues build up, trucks can be routed through Hamzabeyli–Lesovo, which is dedicated largely to freight traffic. The smaller Dereköy–Malko Tarnovo crossing can make sense for deliveries towards Burgas and the Black Sea coast.

Shipments too small for a full trailer go as groupage (LTL): pallets are consolidated in Istanbul and delivered from a distribution point in Bulgaria. For heavy, oversized or bulk cargo, sea freight via the ports of Varna and Burgas is an option. Bulgaria also sits on the main corridor to Romania and Central Europe; if the goods are destined for another EU country, they can move under a T1 transit document and be cleared at final destination. See our Europe destinations and Romania pages for neighbouring lanes.

How long does shipping to Bulgaria take?

Distances are short, so the real variable is waiting time at the border. Mondays and the days before public holidays tend to bring the longest queues at Kapıkule. The ranges below are typical and depend on routing, season and customs handling.

    Mode Typical transit Best for
Road, full truck (FTL) Typically 1–3 days Full loads and regular production flows
Road, groupage (LTL) Typically 3–6 days incl. consolidation A few pallets, samples and small batches
Sea (Varna / Burgas) Typically 3–7 days, depending on sailings Bulk, heavy and project cargo
Air (Sofia) Typically 1–2 days Urgent spare parts and low-volume, high-value goods

For a wider comparison, see our guide to Turkey–Europe transit times.

    Which documents are required?

    • Commercial invoice and packing list with package count, gross/net weights and HS codes
    • Turkish export declaration
    • CMR consignment note (see our CMR guide)
    • A.TR for industrial goods, or EUR.1 / EUR-MED for agricultural and ECSC steel products, explained in A.TR vs EUR.1
    • Where relevant: T1 transit document, the carrier’s EU entry summary declaration, and product-specific papers such as CE conformity, phytosanitary or veterinary certificates, or ADR documents for dangerous goods

Customs duty and VAT in Bulgaria

Under the EU–Turkey Customs Union, industrial goods in free circulation in Turkey enter Bulgaria duty-free with an A.TR. Basic agricultural products, processed agricultural goods and steel follow different regimes and only get preferential treatment with a valid EUR.1 or origin declaration. Some product groups may also be subject to EU anti-dumping measures, so a tariff check before contracting is worthwhile.

Duty exemption does not cover VAT: Bulgarian import VAT (standard 20%, with reduced rates for certain goods) is charged at import and can usually be recovered by a VAT-registered buyer. For steel, aluminium, cement and fertilisers, the importer may also have obligations under the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM); it is worth confirming this with the buyer in advance.

    Which option makes sense when?

For regular, full-trailer flows, FTL road freight offers the best balance of speed and handling risk. Weekly shipments of a few pallets are cheaper as groupage, at the cost of a few extra days for consolidation. Out-of-gauge machinery or bulk goods may justify sea freight through a Bulgarian port, and a line-down situation is the typical case for air freight. When agreeing delivery terms (EXW, DAP, DDP), our Incoterms 2020 guide shows where risk and cost pass between seller and buyer.

    Frequently asked questions

How many days does a truck from Istanbul to Sofia take?

A full truck typically delivers in 1–3 days. Border waiting time and customs handling are the main variables.

Is customs duty payable on goods from Turkey to Bulgaria?

Industrial goods with an A.TR are duty-free under the customs union. Import VAT is still due, and agricultural and steel products follow separate rules.

    Which border crossing is used?

Most freight crosses at Kapıkule–Kapitan Andreevo. Hamzabeyli–Lesovo is the usual alternative when queues are long.

Can I ship just a few pallets?

Yes. Groupage consolidates small shipments with other cargo heading the same way.

Can goods transit Bulgaria to another EU country?

Yes. Under a T1 transit procedure the goods cross Bulgaria and are cleared in the country of destination.

    What drives the freight cost?

Volume, weight, pickup and delivery addresses, vehicle type and season. Send your shipment details for an exact quote.
