Shipping clothing, footwear or fuel to Poland? No truck should leave without a SENT reference number.
Freight between Turkey and Poland moves mostly by road, via Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia, with door-to-door transit of typically 5–8 days depending on border queues and season. Industrial goods travelling with an A.TR certificate enter the EU duty-free, but Polish import VAT at 23% (lower rates for some products) still applies. Certain goods — fuels, lubricants, alcohol, tobacco and, since 17 March 2026, clothing and footwear — must also be reported in Poland’s SENT monitoring system.
For most buyers the direct truck is the default: collected at the Turkish factory, delivered without transhipment to Warsaw, Poznań, Kraków, Katowice or wherever the consignee sits.
| Mode | Typical transit | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Direct truck (FTL or groupage) | Typically 5–8 days | Most industrial goods, regular flows, door-to-door delivery |
| Ro-Ro (e.g. Istanbul–Trieste) + road | Varies by routing | Trailer shipments, avoiding land-border congestion |
| Ocean container (Gdańsk / Gdynia) | Several weeks, depending on service and transhipment port | Non-urgent, heavy or bulky FCL cargo; consignees in northern Poland |
Container services from Turkish ports to Gdańsk and Gdynia generally involve transhipment, so sea freight wins on cost rather than speed; see FCL vs LCL and Ro-Ro shipping Turkey–Europe.
The usual corridor enters the EU at Kapıkule (Turkey–Bulgaria), crosses the Danube at Ruse–Giurgiu into Romania, enters Hungary at Nădlac–Csanádpalota and continues through Slovakia into southern Poland. Kapıkule is the EU’s external border; since Bulgaria and Romania fully joined Schengen on 1 January 2025, the internal borders that follow have no systematic checks, though temporary controls can be reintroduced. Waiting time at Kapıkule is usually the biggest variable — see Turkey–Europe transit times.
After Kapıkule, goods are either cleared in the first EU country or carried under T1 to a customs office in Poland, usually near the consignee.
Under the EU–Turkey Customs Union, industrial goods with an A.TR are duty-free; for agricultural products it depends on the tariff line, and preferences require an EUR.1.
Import VAT is charged regardless. The standard rate is 23% (8% or 5% for some foods, books and medical products), charged on the customs value plus any duty and related costs. Importers that meet the conditions (active VAT payer, relevant customs authorisations, prior notification) can account for import VAT in their VAT return under the Article 33a simplified procedure. See also EU import customs clearance.
SENT is Poland’s electronic system, run via the PUESC platform, for monitoring road and rail transport of sensitive goods such as fuels, lubricants, alcohol and tobacco. From 17 March 2026 it also covers clothing (CN chapters 61–62, over 10 kg), used clothing (6309) and footwear (chapter 64, over 20 pairs).
For goods arriving in Poland, the notification is usually the consignee’s responsibility; the carrier must hold the SENT reference number before departure and transmit geolocation data while in Poland. Penalties can reach 46% of the goods’ value, with a minimum of PLN 20,000.
A standard curtainsider is about 13.6 metres long and holds 33 Euro pallets. Groupage (LTL) suits a few pallets; a full truck (FTL) is more economical once you fill most of the deck. Price depends on pickup and delivery cities, pallet count, weight and volume, ADR or temperature control, where customs clearance happens, season and border congestion, and the agreed Incoterms.
By road, door-to-door transit is typically 5–8 days, depending on Kapıkule queues, season and clearance location. Ocean freight to Gdańsk or Gdynia takes several weeks, usually with transhipment.
Commercial invoice, packing list, Turkish export declaration, CMR and, for industrial goods, an A.TR. Add a T1 if goods are cleared in Poland and a SENT number for monitored goods.
Yes. Small loads share a truck with other shipments, which usually lowers the cost per pallet. Consolidation can add a little transit time.
Pickup and delivery addresses, pallet count, weight and volume, groupage or full truck, ADR or temperature control, and season. Clearance location and Incoterms also affect the landed cost.
Industrial goods with an A.TR are duty-free under the EU–Turkey Customs Union; agricultural goods depend on the product. Polish import VAT at 23% (8% or 5% for some goods) is still due.
Pickup and delivery addresses, goods description and HS code, pallet or carton count, gross weight, dimensions, ready date and Incoterms. Flag dangerous goods or SENT-monitored products.
