Road or Ro-Ro to France? We match the routing to your cargo, delivery region and deadline.
Freight from Turkey to France moves in two main ways: by road as a full or part truckload (via the Balkans and Central Europe, or via Italy) or by Ro-Ro from Yalova to the port of Sète, with road delivery from the port. A full truckload typically takes 7–10 days door to door. Industrial goods enter duty-free with an A.TR certificate, while French import VAT (standard 20%) still applies, usually accounted for through autoliquidation by a VAT-registered importer.
Road freight is the most flexible option: the trailer is loaded at your supplier in Turkey and runs to your site in France without transhipment. Trucks leave Turkey through Kapıkule into Bulgaria, then continue via Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy, or via Romania, Hungary, Austria and Germany. From Italy they usually enter France at Ventimiglia or through the Fréjus and Mont Blanc tunnels.
With Ro-Ro, the trailer travels by ship. DFDS operates a Yalova–Sète service (with calls at İzmir and Martaş), a direct link to the French Mediterranean coast that suits deliveries to southern France and the Rhône valley. Another option is Ro-Ro to Trieste, then road to France. The former Pendik–Toulon line has closed and its traffic moved to Sète. More in our guide to Ro-Ro shipping between Turkey and Europe.
Container shipping suits bulky, non-urgent cargo; France’s main Mediterranean container gateway is Marseille-Fos. See FCL vs LCL for when each makes sense.
| Mode | Typical door-to-door time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Full truckload (FTL) | 7–10 days | Full-trailer, time-sensitive shipments |
| Groupage (LTL) | 9–14 days | A few pallets, regular smaller orders |
| Ro-Ro (Yalova–Sète) | Around 5–10 days | Southern France, avoiding Balkan border queues |
| Sea container (Fos) | Varies by carrier and transhipment | Non-urgent, bulky or heavy cargo |
Istanbul to Paris is roughly 2,700–2,800 km by road. A full truckload usually delivers in 7–10 days; groupage adds a few days for consolidation. The main variables are border congestion (especially at Kapıkule), holidays, winter conditions on Alpine crossings and the delivery region: Lyon and Marseille are generally reached sooner than Paris or the north. Compare countries in Turkey–Europe transit times.
The French importer needs a valid EORI number. Product rules such as CE marking or French-language labelling may also apply.
Turkish-origin industrial goods with an A.TR enter France free of customs duty; for agricultural products it depends on the product. Import VAT (TVA) is always due: 20% standard, with reduced rates (10%, 5.5%, 2.1%) for certain goods.
Since 1 January 2022, VAT-registered businesses in France declare import VAT through autoliquidation on their VAT return (CA3) instead of paying it at the border, quoting their French VAT number on the customs declaration. If your Turkish supplier sells DDP, it becomes the importer and generally needs French VAT registration and, in most cases, a fiscal representative. Our Incoterms 2020 guide helps you choose.
A standard 13.6 m curtainsider takes about 33 euro pallets and up to roughly 24 tonnes; mega trailers offer more internal height. Below half a trailer, groupage is usually more economical, at the cost of a longer transit. Height, stackability and ADR class all affect the choice of vehicle.
A full truckload usually takes 7–10 days door to door, groupage 9–14 days. Ro-Ro via Yalova–Sète to southern France typically takes 5–10 days, depending on season, borders and delivery region.
Commercial invoice, packing list, Turkish export declaration, CMR and, for industrial goods, an A.TR. Agricultural and steel products need an EUR.1, and the French importer needs an EORI number.
Yes. Small shipments travel as groupage, consolidated with other cargo. It costs less than a full truck but usually takes a few days longer.
Pickup and delivery addresses, pallets, volume and weight, full or part load, routing (road or Ro-Ro), season and special equipment such as reefer or ADR. Who handles customs, for example under DDP, also matters.
Turkish-origin industrial goods with an A.TR are duty-free; agricultural goods depend on the product. Import VAT (standard 20%) is still due and is accounted for by autoliquidation if the importer is VAT-registered in France.
Pickup and delivery addresses with postcodes, goods and HS code, number of pallets, dimensions, weight, stackability, ready date and Incoterms. Mention if the cargo is dangerous or temperature-controlled.
