Ro-Ro Shipping Türkiye to Europe: Routes and Costs

Ro-Ro shipping means wheeled cargo drives on and off the vessel under its own wheels. On the Türkiye–Italy lane that is not an academic distinction: it removes the Balkan border crossings, the transit countries and the driver waiting time entirely. Cargo that takes 6 to 9 days by road usually arrives in 3 to 4 by Ro-Ro — and, more importantly, the transit time becomes predictable.

How Ro-Ro works

On a container ship the cargo is lifted by crane; on a Ro-Ro vessel the unit is driven up a ramp. There are three configurations, and the difference between them drives the cost:

Configuration What travels When it makes sense
Accompanied Tractor unit, trailer and driver Door-to-door with one vehicle; the driver sails with the unit
Unaccompanied Trailer only The common and cheaper option; local tractors handle both ends
Mafi / roll trailer Out-of-gauge or non-wheeled cargo on a roll trailer Project cargo and heavy pieces

Unaccompanied cuts cost substantially because neither tractor nor driver makes the crossing. The trade-off is that both ends need tractor coverage, and a failure there gives back at the port what was saved at sea.

Ro-Ro or road?

The decision is not about distance. It turns on three variables: predictability of transit, total cost, and where the delivery point sits.

Ro-Ro Road via Kapikule
Transit time Short, narrow range Longer, varies with border congestion
Predictability High — fixed sailing schedule Low — gate waiting measured in days
Transit countries None Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and so on
Driver cost None when unaccompanied Runs for the whole route
Flexibility Tied to the sailing schedule Departure any time
Inland European points Extra haulage after the port Direct delivery

The working rule: for northern Italy, Spain and southern France, Ro-Ro is usually ahead. For inland Germany or Poland the directness of road offsets the post-port haulage that Ro-Ro requires.

Documents and customs

For customs purposes Ro-Ro is road transport, so the document set is the road set:

The one real difference is that with no transit country in the route, the need for a T1 disappears in most scenarios. Goods leave Türkiye and enter the EU directly, so no transit regime has to be opened — one document, one guarantee and one discharge to track fewer.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ro-Ro shipping?

It is sea transport where wheeled units drive on and off the vessel via a ramp rather than being lifted by crane. On the Türkiye–Europe corridor it is used as an alternative to the road route through the Balkans.

What is the difference between accompanied and unaccompanied?

Accompanied means the tractor unit, trailer and driver all sail. Unaccompanied means only the trailer sails and local tractors handle each end. Unaccompanied is usually cheaper because neither driver nor tractor makes the crossing.

Is Ro-Ro faster than road?

On most Türkiye–Italy shipments yes, but the real difference is predictability rather than raw speed. Sailings run to a fixed schedule with no border queue, while the same load by road can vary by days depending on the season.

Is a T1 needed on Ro-Ro?

Usually not. With no transit country in the routing the goods leave Türkiye and enter the destination country directly, so no transit regime is opened. A T1 may still be required on routings that touch a third country.

Can dangerous goods travel by Ro-Ro?

Yes, though not every class on every sailing. Operators apply their own rules by class and quantity, so acceptance has to be confirmed for the specific service before loading.

Can groupage move by Ro-Ro?

Yes. Part loads are consolidated onto one trailer and the trailer moves by Ro-Ro. From the shipper’s side it works no differently from a full load.

Which is cheaper overall?

There is no single answer. Unaccompanied Ro-Ro removes driver and tractor cost and is competitive on most Italian lanes, but as the post-port haulage distance grows the balance shifts back to road. We price both with every charge included.

Which destinations suit it best?

Italy, Spain and southern France in particular. For inland Germany and Eastern Europe the distance after the port usually keeps road ahead.
